How do I use a VPN to access TaxCalc remotely?

The best way to use TaxCalc across multiple locations is likely to be via a virtual private network (VPN).

A VPN allows you to connect securely from a remote location back to a central location. Once connected, you can access most or all of the facilities of that central point (subject to bandwidth).

You can use software such as LogMeIn Hamachi to establish a VPN but this isn't as flexible as using a router.

Using a router as a VPN endpoint is the the best way for most small to medium size companies to achieve fully featured VPN capability.

Using a router

Most routers supplied by ISPs cannot be used as a VPN endpoint so you may need to buy a replacement device. Common brands that make the appropriate models include DrayTek, ZyXEL, Linksys and D-Link.

We recommend that you ask your IT support services to commission the router, get the VPN working and configure the client on your PC.

Once installed, you can use TaxCalc almost transparently from wherever you are. When you're in the office, you run TaxCalc normally. When out of the office, start the VPN client and then start TaxCalc.

The only data traversing the VPN will be the database reads and writes. This means the traffic level is very light and most users shouldn’t notice any difference in speed between working on a LAN or working over the VPN.

Please Note: TaxCalc cannot assist with setup of VPN connections themselves.

CloudConnect

We released TaxCalc CloudConnect in May 2016. This allows multiple users in multiple locations to access a common TaxCalc database without having to configure a VPN. For further information, read Is there a Cloud version of TaxCalc?
