How do I upgrade my TaxCalc practice software?

Article ID: 2401
Last updated: 02 May, 2018

To understand some of the terms used on this page please read What is the difference between renewing, upgrading and updating my TaxCalc practice software?.

You can upgrade your TaxCalc Tax Return Production or Accounts Production package to a different one at any time. If you're within 30 days of your renewal date, contact our Sales team to upgrade.

Outside the renewal period you can upgrade your account on our website:

  1. Log into your account using your registered email address and password.
  2. Click Upgrade beside your current package – this will display the available upgrade options.
  3. Select a package to check its capacity and price for a full 12 month licence.
  4. Choose the new package you want and click on Buy now.

Your new package will be placed in your basket and the credit for the unused months of your current licence will be applied.

Please note: If you upgrade a package with restricted client numbers the counter on your client capacity will be reset.

Payment for upgrade

When you select a new package you're automatically credited for the remaining period of the licence for your current package. This is calculated to the nearest month, rounded in your favour. You'll then be charged the price for a new 12 month licence for the new package.

This calculation is performed live, so the figure quoted will change over time (at monthly cut-off dates) but you won't lose out as a result. This is because the number of months remaining on the original licence will decrease while the licence period being purchased for the new product will always be 12 months from the date of the change.

Adding a new package to an existing one

All Tax Return Production packages sit on the same licence period so if you add a new package to an existing one a new licence period will need to be started for both.

If you add Corporation Tax Unlimited or Trust Unlimited to Individual and Partnership Unlimited a new licence period will begin for Individual and Partnership Unlimited at the same point. You won't lose out in the process because you'll receive a full refund for the unused portion of the original licence. TaxCalc will calculate this and display it for you.

Tax Return and Accounts licences

Tax Return Production and Accounts Production packages can exist on different licence periods. However, if you want to bring them into line, contact us and we can arrange for you to renew one of them early to coincide with the renewal date of the other.

You're a new customer using Individual and Partnership Unlimited for the first time who paid £340 + VAT on 1 April 2018. You want to add the facility for Corporation Tax returns in June 2018. This means starting a new licence period for Individual and Partnership Unlimited and buying a new licence for Corporation Tax Unlimited.

On 3 June 2018 there will be just under 10 months unused on the original licence. This will be rounded up to 10 full months and result in a credit of £283.33 + VAT (10/12 x £340).

A new 12 month licence for Individual and Partnership Unlimited will be £340 + VAT. A new 12 month licence for Corporation Tax Unlimited will be £225 + VAT.

Proceeding with this transaction at that point would give you:

  • credit of £283.33 + VAT (10/12 x £340)
  • List price of £565 + VAT
  • Total payment price of £281.67 + VAT= £338 for a 12 month licence starting on 3 June 2018. Therefore going forward the renewal date will be 2 June 2019.

If you use the original package for a further month and make the same inquiry on 3 July 2018 there would only be 9 unused months remaining. This would give:

  • credit of £255 + VAT (9/12 x £340)
  • List price of £565 + VAT
  • Total payment price of £310 + VAT= £372 for a 12 month licence starting on 3 July 2018. Therefore going forward the renewal date will be 2 July 2019.
