TaxCalc doesn't generate a print preview

TaxCalc uses the Adobe pdf file standard as its printing output. This allows you to have more control over the printing options and also allows you to save your tax returns as pdf documents.

If you get an error from Adobe Reader when trying to generate a print preview, follow these instructions:

  1. Cancel the error message.
  2. Save and Exit TaxCalc.
  3. Save and Exit all other applications running on your computer.
  4. Start Adobe Reader from the desktop or from All Programs.
  5. Go to Help > Repair Adobe Reader Installation.
  6. Let the repair run and wait a further five to 10 seconds.
  7. Exit Adobe Reader (if required) and Restart your computer.

If this doesn't work, go to View > PDF viewing in the top menu bar and click on one of the following:

  • System default
    • Internal – allows you to create and view the pdf within TaxCalc.
    • External – allows you to create and view the pdf outside of TaxCalc. When you next create a preview, a printable pdf will be loaded in an external Adobe Acrobat/Reader window.
    • Save First – allows you to save the pdf to a folder of your choice before opening it in a new Adobe Acrobat/Reader window.
  • TaxCalc viewer
    • Internal – allows you to create and view the pdf within TaxCalc.
    • New window – allows you to create and view the pdf in a new window within TaxCalc.

If you're still having problems, switch to the TaxCalc Viewer and read the Knowledge Base article How to enable the TaxCalc Internal PDF viewer.

When working with pdfs, bear in mind the following points:

  • TaxCalc uses the data in your tax return file to create the pdf. When you save the pdf, you're simply saving the exported data and not changing the content of the tax return file itself.
  • If you replace or remove the pdf file altogether, you won't affect the tax return file itself or any of your data.
  • If you make any subsequent changes to your tax return you must create a new pdf for printing.
