What to do when receiving error 403 (Client or Agent not Authorised) - Practice User

If you have already filled under Making Tax Digital and you are receiving a 403 error (Client or Agent not authorised), there are multiple reasons this error can be returned but HMRC's investigations have shown that in over 90% of cases the reason is one of the following:

  • The Government Gateway credentials have been used instead of the new Agent Service Account (ASA) credentials when fetching the period.

You need to make sure your entering in the correct credentials, either your Agent services account or your client's own filling credentials for MTD.

Please can you do the following by going to:

  1. Admin Centre \ Applications
  2. Double click on VAT Filer
  3. Go to HMRC API Token Management – Please select and use Delete Token with the MTD tokens in this section.
  4. Click on Continue or Finish and select Finish and Save.

After this has been completed, please do the following:

  1. Open the client in VAT Filer
  2. Then Fetch the VAT Period by authorising TaxCalc to Connect to HMRC you will need to enter in either your Agent services account or your client's filling credentials.
  3. This will create a new token and should resolve the error.

Please note: If you have already fetched the dates from HMRC and you are getting the error 403 when filling online, you need to please delete the period and then re fetch the dates from HMRC and re-map your Excel figures to the relevant boxes.
