When you have charged your customers less VAT than you have actually paid on your purchases, HMRC repay you the difference.

When you complete the boxes on your VAT Return, the information you enter will show you the:

  • Box 3 -Total amount of VAT charged
  • Box 4 -Total amount of VAT paid

If the amount in Box 3 is less than the amount in Box 4, you are due a repayment.

The figure shown in Box 5 of your VAT Return will show you the amount you are being repaid.

How will HMRC pay me?

  • If you have a VAT repayment to receive from HMRC, the best way is to update the bank account details with HMRC by using the Gateway access or sending a form VAT484 by post. This form is found under our HMRC forms tab on your home page in the application (practice users only). For more details please visit the website: https://www.gov.uk/vat-registration/changes-to-your-details
  • If HMRC haven't got your bank details, the repayment is sent by cheque within 30 days. Please refer to the link https://www.gov.uk/vat-repayments

Please make sure that the update is made few weeks before the return. You must tell HMRC at least 14 days in advance if you’re changing your bank details.
