MTD Quarterly Filer - Getting started

MTD Quarterly Filer provides the functionality to complete the in-year submissions (Quarterly Updates) and interacts with TaxCalc modules and other bookkeeping/spreadsheet solutions.

Setting up businesses in MTD Quarterly Filer:

After launching MTD Quarterly Filer:

  1. Select the client you are ready to set up (has been signed up with HMRC) and click Continue
  2. Click on New Tax Year (which will default to 2025/26) and click Create

The Business Information screen will display all businesses already created in Practice Manager for the individual, if they are relevant to the tax year opened (for example, it will not display businesses that have ceased before the start of the tax year). If a business is not linked to an HMRC record, you can use the link to businesses option to check for HMRC business records.

If there are no business records in TaxCalc for the individual, you will have the option to either create them via Practice Manager and the 'Add a business' button in MTD Quarterly Filer or fetch the businesses directly from HMRC.
If the business is a foreign property business, additional information can be entered relating to the countries where the foreign rental property are held. This information is necessary for the submission of quarterly update data. Click Add country to select the country where the property is located; optional commencement and cessation dates can be added. If there are multiple properties in the same country, the country only needs to be added once.

Fetching and/or linking businesses:

  1. Click Fetch businesses from HMRC or Link business(es). If you have not already authorised the software via Admin Centre, the Authorise TaxCalc To Connect To HMRC dialog is displayed.
  2. Click Authorise
  3. Click Sign in to the HMRC online service
  4. Enter your Agent Services User ID and Password and click Sign in
  5. Click Give permission to allow TaxCalc to connect with HMRC.
  6. Click Fetch to fetch information about this client from HMRC. The Business Information screen within TaxCalc displays the information fetched from HMRC for this client.
  7. Click Sync records to set up the business ready for quarterly updates. Sync the information on all tabs where required. Once synced, the information is updated in TaxCalc.
  8. Click Finish set up to check the status of obligations and start working on quarterly updates.
