Phased releases of MTD Tax Returns

We're rolling out our MTD Tax Return Production software in phases. This article explains what's included in this first phase, and what you need to know before you get started.

Phase 1 – August 2026

This release is phase one of MTD Tax Return Production for the 2025/26 tax year.

Important: Tax Returns created in a previous version of the software cannot be used. If you have existing MTD Tax Returns, these will need to be deleted and recreated in this version.

Income, reliefs and adjustments covered in phase one

You can now enter data for:

  • Self Employment, including CIS deductions
  • State pension and other taxable state benefits
  • Bank, building society and other UK interest
  • UK dividend income (excluding directors' dividends)
  • Pension contributions
  • Charitable donations
  • Student and Postgraduate loan repayments
  • Child benefit tax charge

What you can do with this data

For each of the areas listed above, you can:

  • Fetch data from HMRC, where available
  • Send data you've entered in the Tax Return to HMRC
  • Get on-the-fly tax calculations as you work
  • Fetch HMRC's tax calculation for comparison
  • Rely on built-in checks that your data meets HMRC's filing requirements
  • Rely on built-in checks that HMRC's calculation matches the software's calculation
  • Submit the Tax Return
  • Get confirmation that your Tax Return has been received and all obligations for the year have been met

Please note that amendments to submitted Tax Returns will not be available in this release. Although it will be possible to update the software with any required changes and review your revised in-app tax liability, it will not be possible to submit the revised data to HMRC until our October 2026 release.

Phase 2 – October 2026

All other income, reliefs and allowances are planned for release in October 2026.
