Application Version Mismatch

When you update the TaxCalc program, the following message may be shown:

Application Version Mismatch

TaxCalc cannot start because the application and database versions are not in sync. Please shut down TaxCalc and try running the installer again to rectify the problem.

For more guidance on this issue (or if the problem persists) please read this support article on the TaxCalc website.

There are a number of scenarios that can lead to this message being shown when a user attempts to start TaxCalc. It is designed to protect the database from being accessed by PCs that are running an out of date version of the software.

  1. Updates to a networked version of TaxCalc being run from a workstation, without the update first being run from the server
  2. A failed update on a workstation
  3. An old database left behind from an Accounts Production trial
  4. A backup that was taken in an earlier version is restored.

1. Updates to a networked version of TaxCalc being run from a workstation, without the update first being run from the server

The recommendation is that the update is always run from the server before allowing the workstations to run the update. Open TaxCalc on the server and run the update when prompted.

If this fails, run the update with the latest web download and then run TaxCalc on the workstations.

2. A failed update on a workstation

This message may be seen after a workstation fails to run the web update correctly. If this happens update with the latest web download.

3. An old database left behind from an Accounts Production trial

You may have installed a trial version of Accounts Production (AP) in tha past – therefore the database used by the trial version would be detected by the installer and prompt this error.

  1. If you only have one machine and do not need to keep the data from the AP trial:
    1. Contact Support to change your account details. This will enable you to  download the standalone version of TaxCalc.
    2. Download the latest version of TaxCalc from the website.
    3. Run the installation.

  1. If you have more than one PC and need the networked version but do not need to keep the old database, remove the old program and database before reinstalling:
    1. From your desktop, select Start – Control Panel – Uninstall a program.
    2. Uninstall TaxCalc Hub (if you haven’t already) and PostgreSQL 9.0.
    3. Go to My Computer, browse to the C drive and rename taxcalchub folder to taxcalchubold.
    4. Open Program Files (or Program Files x86 if present) and delete the PostgreSQL folder.
    5. Finally, from your desktop select Start and then type ‘cmd’ in the search box, then press <enter>.
    6. Type ‘control userpasswords2 and delete the postgres user.
    7. Download the latest version of TaxCalc from the website.
    8. You can now run the installation using the latest download.

Please Note: It is important that you only follow the steps above if you have no data that you need to keep, as this data cannot be restored.

  1. If you need to keep the data from the AP trial,
    1. Log in to the existing TaxCalc program and go to Administration – Database – Backup Database
    2. From your desktop, select Start – Control Panel – Uninstall a program.
    3. Uninstall TaxCalc Hub (if you haven’t already) and PostgreSQL 9.0.
    4. Go to My Computer, browse to the C drive and rename taxcalchub folder to taxcalchubold.
    5. Open Program Files (or Program Files x86 if present) and delete the PostgreSQL folder.
    6. Finally, from your desktop select Start and then type ‘cmd’ in the search box, then press <enter>.
    7. Type ‘control userpasswords2 and delete the postgres user.
    8. Download the latest version of TaxCalc from the website.
    9. You can now run the installation using the latest download.
    10. Open TaxCalc and log in.
    11. Go to Administration – Database – Restore Database.
    12. Close the TaxCalc program.
    13. Run the full installer once more. This will synchronise the database and program versions.

4. When a backup that was taken in an earlier version is restored

When this occurs the software is the latest version (it has normally been reinstalled) but the database is a prior version… hence the Application Version Mismatch message. In this instance, you will need to go to the server (if in a network) and update with the latest web download first.

If you are using the network version of TaxCalc, make sure to update on the server.

How to update with the latest web download

  • Go to www.taxcalc.com and log on.
  • Click on My Account (next to the login box) which takes you to the download page.
  • Click Download to get TaxCalc.
  • In order to download the file again Tick the box that says ‘I understand…’ and then Download.
  • When the file download is complete, double click on the downloaded file and the installation will start. During the installation, leave all the options at their default settings.

Once the server has been updated, run TaxCalc on any workstations and they should update correctly.
