Importing a Tax Return stored as a file into the Database

TaxCalc defaults the tax returns to be stored in the central database. If you’re using a standalone or network version, you have the option to store your returns either in a local database or in regular files. We do not recommend this as it may cause potential duplication of data, particularly if running a network version.

To import any returns not saved in your database complete the following steps:

  1. Open TaxCalc.
  2. Select the client that has the return you wish to import into the database.
  3. Open in Tax Return Production.
  4. Any returns saved as a file will show a link next to the period (any returns that should be linked but cannot be found are shown as a Broken red link).

In the above example tax return screen, it shows:

  1. As a file
  2. Broken Link (File not found)
  3. Saved in the database.

To import the file into the database

  1. Select the tax return to import.
  2. Click on Properties then import.
  3. This imports the file into the database so it will always be found.

To import a file with a broken link

  1. Select the return
  2. Click on properties
  3. The location where the file was when created is shown.
  4. Select relocate and browse to the files new location

  1. Select the file.
  2. Once relocated and the link is not red, you can then import the return into the database as per the instructions above.

Note: Importing the tax return does not delete the original file from the file structure.
