Phased releases of MTD Tax Returns
We're rolling out our MTD Tax Return Production software in phases. This article explains what's included in this first phase, and what you need to know before you get started.
Phase 1 – August 2026
This release is phase one of MTD Tax Return Production for the 2025/26 tax year.
Important: Tax Returns created in a previous version of the software cannot be used. If you have existing MTD Tax Returns, these will need to be deleted and recreated in this version.
Income, reliefs and adjustments covered in phase one
You can now enter data for:
- Self Employment, including CIS deductions
- State pension and other taxable state benefits
- Bank, building society and other UK interest
- UK dividend income (excluding directors' dividends)
- Pension contributions
- Charitable donations
- Student and Postgraduate loan repayments
- Child benefit tax charge
What you can do with this data
For each of the areas listed above, you can:
- Fetch data from HMRC, where available
- Send data you've entered in the Tax Return to HMRC
- Get on-the-fly tax calculations as you work
- Fetch HMRC's tax calculation for comparison
- Rely on built-in checks that your data meets HMRC's filing requirements
- Rely on built-in checks that HMRC's calculation matches the software's calculation
- Submit the Tax Return
- Get confirmation that your Tax Return has been received and all obligations for the year have been met
Please note that amendments to submitted Tax Returns will not be available in this release. Although it will be possible to update the software with any required changes and review your revised in-app tax liability, it will not be possible to submit the revised data to HMRC until our October 2026 release.
Phase 2 – October 2026
Our October 2026 release brings in full functionality for the following additional income, reliefs and allowances:
- UK land and property businesses
- Employment
- UK and foreign pension income
- Marriage allowance transfer
- UK and foreign pension charges
- Class 2 and Class 4 maximum charge and voluntary Class 2
- Ability to create, amend and delete CIS data
- Post-cessation and business receipts
- Tax avoidance schemes
- Annual pension allowance
- UK & foreign life insurance gains
- Directors’ dividends
- Reliefs including annual payments, loan interest, post-cessation, maintenance payments etc
- Foreign dividends, interest and other foreign income (not including property)
In addition, in the October 2026 release, we are also providing functionality which compares the calculation produced by the software against HMRC’s calculation which can be used to identify differences between the calculations.
Phase 3 - Winter 2026
Phase 4 – Spring 2027
The following income, reliefs and allowances will be added for the 2026/27 Tax Returns onwards.
- Foreign property
- Working abroad
- UK patent royalty payments & payments to a trade union for death benefits
- Any other income such as PIDs
- Other reliefs such as VCT, SEIS etc
- Tax adjustments to carry back losses
- SBA & Freeport capital allowances
- Winter fuel payment charge
- Income from partnership
